We stayed the second night in Flateyri.  There’s little to report, as we didn’t spend long there.  But here’s something interesting:

I don’t know how well you can see it, but here at the base of the mountain is a gigantic dyke shaped like the letter A.  When avalanches come roaring down the hillside, the townsfolk go into this A through that little tunnel you see that looks like a drainage pipe. The pointy shape of the A guides the tidal waves of snow and debris around the occupants.  And don’t worry about them getting bored while they’re in there – there’s a playground inside.
